THE LOCAL GUIDE

Why you'll love this place.

Burnaby Village Museum is a recreated 1920s town on the north side of Deer Lake, with a blacksmith, a general store, a schoolhouse, a church and a working streetcar, and in the second half of October it leans into Halloween the way a small town a century ago might have. Pumpkins appear on porches, corn stalks are tied to the posts, costumed interpreters tell slightly spooky stories, and as dusk falls the street lamps come on and the whole place glows.

The star is the carousel, a restored 1912 wooden merry-go-round housed in its own pavilion. On an autumn evening, with its lights on and leaves blowing across the path outside, it is one of the most atmospheric sights in Burnaby, and children rarely want to ride it only once.

Halloween programming is gentle. This is a place for crafts, candy and pleasant shivers rather than genuine fright, which makes it a good match for younger children who would find the region’s haunted attractions too much. The village is also attractive by day in October, when the heritage trees along the streets turn gold.

Because the museum sits beside Deer Lake, you can build a full outing: a lap of the lake while the light is good, then the village as evening comes. Tickets for Halloween dates are limited and often sell out, parking is shared with the park and busy, and the exact programme changes each year, so check the museum’s own calendar before you commit.

What makes it special

  • Right next to Deer Lake Park for a fall-colour walk before you arrive

A few practical tips

  • Halloween events are ticketed and run on specific dates; regular admission and hours differ from the seasonal programme.
  • Parking is shared with Deer Lake Park and fills on event evenings; arrive early.
  • Most of the village is outdoors on gravel and boardwalk, so dress for the weather.
